At New Scooters 4 Less, we’re passionate about getting students where they need to go—safely. We love the freedom scooters provide, but we also see some common mistakes that put riders at risk. As strong advocates for student safety, we want to highlight a few things we see all too often and how to avoid them.

1. Texting While Riding

We live in a connected world, but there is absolutely no safe way to text while riding a scooter. Even if you’re stopped at a red light, taking your attention off the road for just a moment can be dangerous. Keep your phone in your pocket or bag and focus on the ride. If you must use your phone for navigation or music, invest in a hands-free mount and set everything up before you start your ride.

2. Lane Splitting & Improper Lane Use

Lane splitting—riding between cars in traffic—is illegal in Florida. You should also avoid using bicycle lanes, which are strictly for cyclists. Instead, ride in your designated lane and always follow traffic laws. Riding predictably and within legal limits keeps you and others safe.

3. Letting Your Feet Hang Down

This one is especially common with passengers. Letting your feet dangle while on a scooter is incredibly unsafe. You risk burning your leg on the exhaust or catching your foot on the pavement or an object, potentially causing a serious accident. Always keep your feet planted firmly on the scooter’s footrests.

4. Wearing Flip-Flops or Sandals

We get it—this is Florida, and flip-flops are part of the culture. But they don’t belong on a scooter. Wearing open-toed shoes puts you at risk of serious injury if your foot drags against the pavement or if you get into an accident. Always wear closed-toed shoes to protect yourself while riding.

5. Scooters Are Fun, But They Aren’t Toys

We love seeing people enjoy their scooters, but reckless riding is dangerous. We’ve seen too many people pulling stunts, cutting through areas they shouldn’t, riding on sidewalks, or treating their scooter like a toy. Scooters are vehicles and should be treated with the same level of responsibility as a car or motorcycle. Stay safe, stay alert, and always respect the road.

6. Don’t Wear Headphones While Riding

We know listening to music is fun, but please don’t wear AirPods or headphones when riding a scooter. You want to be able to hear what is happening around you. Being aware of surrounding traffic, emergency vehicles, and other potential hazards can help prevent accidents and keep you safe on the road.

Bonus Tips for Safer Riding

  • Plan Your Route Wisely – Gainesville is set up in a grid, which means you can avoid busy roads by taking lower-traffic residential streets. Learning alternate routes can make your ride safer and more enjoyable.
  • Wear Eye Protection – Sunglasses work great during the day, but at night, be sure to have clear glasses to protect your eyes from wind, debris, and bugs.
  • ALWAYS Wear a Helmet – It’s the simplest and most effective way to protect yourself. Helmets save lives—wear one every time you ride.

At New Scooters 4 Less, we never got into this business to see people get hurt. We want you to enjoy the freedom of riding a scooter while making smart, safe choices. Let’s work together to make Gainesville a safer place for all riders!

Ride safe, Scooter Fam!
