At New Scooters 4 Less, when it comes to student transportation, we’ve seen it all— We’re in the business of helping students get where they need to go, and we take that responsibility seriously.
Over the last few years, electric scooters (e-scooters) have been on the rise in college towns like Gainesville. And while they may seem like a sleek, affordable option on the surface, we’ve found that many students (and their parents) discover the real costs after it’s too late.
Let’s break it down.
Our Entry Into the E-Scooter Space
As e-scooters grew in popularity, we jumped in. Look— we’ve always gone with the flow— We’re here to serve students, period. We’ve been around to see students jump from Facebook to Instagram to SnapChat to Tik Tok, so why would student transportation be any different? As e-scooters grew in popularity, we started helping customers service them and quickly realized some problems…
Durability, Power, and Practicality
Most e-scooters top out around 15–20 mph, struggle with hills, and at the moment… there are very little laws regulating them. As e-scooters continue to gain in popularity, we expect that to change.
Compare that to a 49cc motor scooter, which goes 30+ mph, is built for the road, and is a true commuter vehicle that thrives in rain or shine.
Motor scooters are more visible, more stable, and better suited for everyday use—especially if you’re riding year-round.
Maintenance and Repair: The Hidden Problem with E-Scooters
Full transparency, here’s where things have been getting frustrating for us as a dealer. We want to be able to offer support to our customers, but due to the thousands of Chinese e-scooter manufacturers/distributors, stocking parts for all available brands is impossible. Everything has to be ordered…
We’ve had customers come in with broken e-scooters that they bought online, who are stunned when they hear:
- Weeks of waiting for parts — many of which have to ship directly from China.
- No labor warranties provided by e-scooter manufacturers or distributors OR you have to package it up and ship it back.
- High cost of parts (seriously… some repair quotes exceed the original value of the scooter).
- Limited repair options — Outside of flat tire fixes and converting to solid rubber tires, most repairs just aren’t worth it.
We hate having to tell students, “Sorry, this isn’t fixable.” But when a repair bill hits $400+ for a $500 e-scooter, that’s the reality.
With motor scooters, it’s a totally different story:
- We stock thousands of dollars of parts right here at NS4L.
- Most repairs are completed within a day or two (unless we are in our seasonal rush, of course).
- You get access to experienced service techs with decades of experience working on motor scooters.
- With our motor scooters, warranties cover both parts and labor, and because we have such a high reputation with our distributors, warranty claims are hassle-free.
Value Over Time
E-scooters may feel cheaper up front, but they often:
- Break down faster
- Have no resale value
- Aren’t reliable for multi-year transportation needs
A quality 49cc gas scooter can easily last 4+ years, often resells for hundreds, and saves time, money, and stress.
It’s why we say:
“Buy a scooter now, ride it through college, and sell it when you graduate.”
That’s smart transportation.
Parents, This Part Is for You
We know many of you are helping your student make a big decision. Safety, reliability, and overall value are essential to you—and they should be.
Here’s why many parents ultimately choose a motor scooter for their student:
Bigger, safer vehicles
Headlights, turn signals, and street legality
Local service and support
Longer lifespan
Better resale value
And when your student is dealing with class, work, and everything in between, the last thing they need is a scooter stuck in the shop waiting for a part from across the world.
But Wait… Don’t You Sell E-Scooters?
Yes—we have, but for the reasons mentioned above, we are in the process of phasing them out. We want to be able to support our customers, and until things improve with these distributors, we’re not able to continue selling them. We will be making serious changes and wanted you to know about them in advance!
