It’s one of the first big questions every incoming UF student asks: “Do I really need to bring my car to campus?”

The short answer: probably not. In fact, most students find that a motor scooter (or “moped,” as many call them) is the smarter, more convenient, and way more fun choice. Here’s why:
1. Parking Is a Headache (Unless You’re on a Scooter)
Parking a car at UF is tough. Spaces are VERY limited and most freshmen aren’t even eligible for on-campus car permits (or at least for anything that is actually convenient). With a scooter, you can park in any of the scooter zones across campus—close to your classes, the library, and even the football stadium on game days. No circling the lot. No parking miles away.
2. Get Around on Your Time
Buses are free, but they run on their own schedule. A scooter means you’re in control. Need to jet from your dorm to class in 5 minutes? Easy. Want to grab lunch mid-day without waiting 20 minutes for a bus? Done. You’ll save tons of time and frustration.
3. Save Money
Scooters are much cheaper to maintain, fuel, and insure (which is even a requirement in Florida) compared to cars. Many scooters get 80–100 miles per gallon, so you can cruise all week on just a couple bucks’ worth of gas. And unlike cars, you won’t be stuck paying for expensive campus parking permits.
4. Campus + City Friendly
Gainesville was built for scooters. From Midtown to Archer Road, you’ll see thousands of students zipping around daily. It’s the easiest way to explore campus and the city—whether that’s heading to class, meeting friends, or grabbing groceries.
5. Independence & Freedom
Freshman year is about finding your rhythm. A scooter gives you independence without the stress of car ownership. You’ll still be able to get home during breaks (many students carpool), but day-to-day life in Gainesville? A scooter just makes more sense.
Final Word
If you’re a freshman wondering whether to bring a car, our advice is simple: leave the car at home and get a scooter. You’ll thank yourself later when you’re breezing into class while your friends are still circling for a parking spot.
Welcome to the Gator Nation—see you in the scooter lane!
