You’ve made it. You’re in Gainesville! — home of the University of Florida, Gator football, and a community you’re about to call home for the next few years. Whether you’re moving in for the first time or coming back for another semester, those first few days are exciting… and a little overwhelming.
Here’s a list of the top things you should do as soon as you land in town to make your fall semester start off right.
1. Explore Campus
UF’s campus is huge, and the sooner you get familiar with it, the easier life will be. Find your classrooms, locate your favorite study spots, and figure out where the good coffee is hiding.
2. Get Your Transportation Sorted
Whether you’re walking, biking, scootering, or busing, Gainesville has options. If you want the fastest, easiest way to get to class and around town, a scooter is hard to beat. Yes, we’re biased. No hunting for parking, no waiting for the bus — just hop on and go. (If you need help finding one, you know where to find us at New Scooters 4 Less.)
3. Stock Up on Essentials
Target runs are inevitable. So are multiple trips to Publix. Grab the basics for your dorm or apartment, but also think about those “I didn’t realize I’d need this” items — a rain jacket, reusable water bottle, extra phone charger, and a fan for those hot September days.
4. Find Your People
The friends you make in the first few weeks can shape your entire college experience. Join a club, check out RecSports, introduce yourself to your neighbors, and don’t be afraid to start conversations. Gainesville is full of communities — from intramural sports to faith-based groups — where you’ll find your place.
5. Experience Gainesville Beyond UF
There’s life beyond campus. Explore downtown Gainesville, grab brunch at a local spot, check out the farmers market, bike the Hawthorne Trail, or watch a sunset at Paynes Prairie. You’ll be here for a while — get to know your city.
6. Go to a Gator Game
Even if you’re not a huge sports fan, The Swamp on game day is an experience you don’t want to miss. Wear orange and blue, learn the chants, and join the sea of Gators for an unforgettable day. August 30th (first game) is almost here!!!!! Also, if your parents need parking, we offer it at the shop on Game Days 🙂
7. Set Your Semester Game Plan
Once the excitement dies down, take a little time to get organized. Map out assignments, set up a class schedule, and block off time for self-care. College life moves fast — planning ahead can make a huge difference.
Starting a new semester is more than just moving in — it’s about planting your roots and making Gainesville your home. The more you explore, connect, and get involved, the more you’ll get out of your time here.
Welcome to UF. Go Gators.
